How to find moldavites

A large number of foreign lovers of minerals and crystals come to the Czech Republic every year with the clear aim of finding a moldavite of their own. Very often, however, they are not successful, mainly because they are not able to recognise it on the ground. It may come as a surprise that moldavite lying on the ground is rarely green. It is usually black, which can be confusing to inexperienced seekers. It is a good idea to look at the stone in the light of the sun the moment you suspect that it is a moldavite. If the light passes through it and turns green when it comes into contact with the stone, then you have found a moldavite.

In areas where moldavites are found, the most common and legal way to search for them is in the fields. The fields are regularly ploughed. The lower layers of the soil are brought to the surface, and with them also moldavites. The best chance to find a piece is after rain (when the Moldavites are not dusty and easily visible) and ideally right after ploughing, when the fields are not covered with crops. In the Czech Republic you have the right of free movement wherever there are no prohibition signs, so you can walk in the fields. Keep in mind, however, that it is not a good idea to enter a field when the plants are being grown, as you may interfere with the farmer's harvest.

In 2022 the Moldavite Museum in Český Krumlov launched a program called "Find your own Moldavite!". It is an opportunity for people to dig for their own moldavite. The price of this experience is 3,000 CZK (approx. 130 euros). You can stay at the site for 3 hours, you will receive all the necessary equipment for digging, and if you are successful, you can buy the found piece from the museum. However, large moldavites are not allowed to be taken away and must be handed over to the museum collection.
