Localities
More than 99% of moldavites are found in the area of South Bohemia. Much smaller moldavite deposits can be found in areas of Moravia, Germany and Austria. Each locality has its own peculiarities and there are often noticeable differences in the shape and structure (sculptation) of moldavites from different areas. The National Museum in Prague records 263 localities of these tektites.
Very atypical are moldavites from Moravia. Their occurrence is limited to only a few locations. These moldavites are on average larger than those in South Bohemia and have a brown to black color. Under the light, they are yellow to brown-orange. These moldavites are not usually available for sale. There are only a few pieces on the market and they are quite expensive. Many people also find colour of these pieces unattractive.
Localities can be divided into two groups:
Fields: Moldavites are mainly sought on the surface. They are often damaged and as a result of the exogenous processes, there is usually no significant sculptation. However, in some field locations (e.g. Třebanice) is possible to find attractive looking pieces.
Mining areas: Moldavites are dug up. Because they are covered by a layer of soil that protects them from the weather and agricultural machinery, they tend to be in better condition than those found in the field. Locality of this type is e.g. Nesměň.
