Moldavites

History

Moldavites were officially discovered in 1787 in southern Bohemia by Dr. Josef Mayer from Charles University in Prague. Hundred years later, the first piece was found in Moravia. But they were already in use in the stone age. Moldavites has sharp edges when broken, it could therefore be used as a primitive knife.

There is no evidence of the use of these tektites from the ancient world and the Middle Ages. There have been no findings of jewellery or other artefacts made of moldavites. They did not return to the public consciousness until the late 19th century.

Moldavites are now more popular than ever. They are found in mineral and rock collectors, crystal dealers, jewelers, healers and boutiques worldwide. But this brings with it threats. Some deposits have already been mined, some are heavily guarded. Moldavites become scarcer every year and the price may increase even more but they are certainly never going to lose their popularity.
